Lathrop, San Joaquin County
Leland Stanford created Lathrop around 1870 as a railroad junction and named it for his brother-in-law, Charles Lathrop. In 1889 the station dining room was the scene of a notorious shooting, when a federal marshal guarding Supreme Court Justice Stephen Field killed David Terry, a former chief justice of California. Lathrop incorporated a century later, in 1989.
